What is Two-Tone Cardstock?

Two-tone cardstock is a two-color, white-core. What does that mean? It is a white paper printed in full color on each side. One side has a dark shade, and the other side has a lighter shade of the same color.

While two-tone cardstock isn’t a new concept, it is a new addition to the Stampin’ Up! product family. We think you’ll love the extensive color offerings, the slightly lighter weight than traditional cardstock, and the versatility it gives you for your projects.

The Advantages of Two-Tone Cardstock

One of the biggest advantages of using two-tone cardstock is how versatile it is. There are several techniques you can use with two-tone cardstock that aren’t possible or are more difficult to do with standard cardstock. These techniques include tearing, distressing, and tone-on-tone layering, just to name a few. The lighter weight also makes it great to use with e-cutters.

The following two examples use our Bright Yellow/Butter Yellow two-tone cardstock, also known as “Lemon Lolly.”

The rainbow in the card above was created using two-tone cardstock and the Sunshine Vibes Die Set. The two rings on the outermost edge are made using opposite sides of Daffodil Delight, with the darker side being used for the outer ring and the lighter side for the next ring toward the center. The next two rings were made using Petal Pink, and the last, smallest ring is the darker side of Calypso Coral.

The rainbow in the card above was created using two-tone cardstock and the Sunshine Vibes Die Set. The two rings on the outermost edge are made using opposite sides of Daffodil Delight, with the darker side being used for the outer ring and the lighter side for the next ring toward the center.

These flower petals also use Bright Yellow/Butter Yellow cardstock (Daffodil Delight) layered to give the appearance of depth. The top layer of petals has been distressed to give it a more realistic look, as it blends with the flower center. The stem and leaves of the flower are also a great example of how to utilize two-tone cardstock. No more trying to find the perfect light and dark color combos!

The brown “wood frame” around the photo was also created using two-tone cardstock. Pecan Pie two-tone cardstock was embossed with the Timber 3D Embossing Folder and the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine to give the paper a bark-like texture. Then, the embossed paper was lightly sanded, so some of the colored paper was removed, letting the white core show through. Pro tip: Lightly mist your two-tone cardstock with water before embossing to “soften” the paper fibers to help prevent cracking. Fully let the paper dry before sanding to create the distressed look!

How to Use Two-Tone Cardstock in Your Projects

Even though there are new techniques you can use with two-tone cardstock, it still works with all your old favorites too. You can even use it in your e-cutting machine. Here are a few more examples of projects that feature two-tone cardstock to help you see the possibilities.
