Creative Challenge: Using Card Sketches

Card sketches offer a roadmap for every paper crafting enthusiast, from beginners learning how to coordinate colors to advanced crafters trying to hone their craft. Card sketches give you time to outline your project, make sure you have everything you need to make your creative vision come to fruition, and help make recreating that card easier in the future.
Sometimes beginner crafters need a little inspiration to help them get started—and we know how valuable a template can be for first timers, but don’t discount the importance of card sketches regardless of your skill level. Even advanced crafters can find inspiration and insight by utilizing existing card sketches (or creating their own!).
We chose two basic card sketches to show you how easily you can customize any card sketch to create a beautiful, balanced card. First, a card sketch with a basic outline—the sentiment repeated with a little embellishment on top.
How to Use a Card Sketch to Inspire Your DIY Card
Ready for a little inspiration? Here’s how to turn a card template or sketch into a handcrafted card that feels unique and custom to the recipient.

Note how the heart on the finished card isn’t a circle, even though the sketch showed a circle. That’s the beauty of the template—it gives you a starting point to add your creativity. We used the Alphabet a la Mode dies for the letters, and the heart and sprigs come from the Say Something Mix and Match Ephemera Pack. These are basic enough supplies (an alphabet die set and a basic ephemera pack) that even if you don’t have these exact items, you could still create something similar with ease.

Again, you can see that there are customizations to this basic template, but it’s still the same basic shape and function. Note that we used colorful paper behind the “birthday” stamps to add even more detail and visual interest.

Another birthday card, same template, even similar colors, but a completely different end result. Some might think a card sketch might limit creativity, but one sketch can clearly yield so many fun card designs.

This card shows how easily you can add a new message to the same card sketch. Complete with a darling illustration, a charming pun, and a background for added dimension, this card follows the template almost perfectly, but still feels very different from the other cards.

Our next card sketch covers a wide range of sentiments, uses, colors, and details. First, we have a classic: the birthday card. We swapped the large rectangle for an adorable cake image using this basic template. Remember, you don’t have to match the shapes perfectly; it’s more about creating a similar layout.

This is another great example of a small tweak making a big impact on the final result. Instead of a right-justified starburst shape, we centered that shape and added just one tilted background. Using different colors and textures, this simple card is perfect to pull out when someone you love needs a pick-me-up.

With a floral approach to this card template, this sweet card takes the “star burst” effect and adds a natural element with the branches. Simply using the blueprint of the card sketch provided a good foundation for the next steps.
