Every year, on the first Saturday of May, people around the globe come together to celebrate National Scrapbooking Day. While the history of this holiday is a bit obscure, the art of scrapbooking can be traced back to the 15th century. Over the years, scrapbooking has been used as a way to preserve history and memories.

Have you ever looked back on a family vacation or special occasion and wished you had more? Maybe you have a lot of pictures, but can’t quite remember the details. Or maybe all you have are the stories from that day, but you can’t seem to find the corresponding pictures.

Whatever the case, scrapbooking is a timeless way to preserve important memories. With National Scrapbooking Day approaching, this may be the perfect time to capture a few memories you hold dear.

What is National Scrapbooking Day?

Every year, on the first Saturday of May, people around the globe come together to celebrate National Scrapbooking Day. While the history of this holiday is a bit obscure, the art of scrapbooking can be traced back to the 15th century. Over the years, scrapbooking has been used as a way to preserve history and memories.

This year, National Scrapbooking Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 3, 2025. Whether you are an experienced scrapbooker or have never crafted a day in your life, this holiday is a great excuse to join in the fun and capture some of your favorite memories.

Why Memory Keeping is Important in a Digital World

We live in a digital world—a world where cameras are always at our fingertips. Whether we’re taking pictures for ourselves or posting on our social media feed, it can be easy to think that a picture will capture the moment we’re trying to hold on to. However, taking photos is not a perfect memory-retention tool. In an interview with KUOW, Linda Henkel, a psychology professor at Fairfield University, stated, “When people rely on technology to remember something for them, they’re essentially outsourcing their memory. They know their camera is capturing that moment for them, so they don’t pay full attention to it in a way that might help them remember.”

When done mindfully, taking pictures can help cue memories. The key is to use pictures to our advantage. One way we can do this is by looking at our photos regularly. As we look at pictures, our memories are activated, and we are able to experience an emotional connection to the event or activity we are remembering. Henkel suggests making our photos manageable and accessible. And what better way to do this than with scrapbooking!

Reasons to Scrapbook

  • To preserve memories
  • To share experiences with others
  • To enhance the story of your photos
  • To remember the details
  • To creatively represent your experiences

Whatever your reason, scrapbooking is a great way to preserve and pass down memories.

How to Celebrate National Scrapbooking Day

Whether you’re an avid crafter or just starting, National Scrapbooking Day is the perfect excuse to preserve some memories (and make more along the way)! Here are some ideas to get you started.

Pick a Theme

If you’re unsure where to start, think of what you want to document. Maybe you want to celebrate a milestone—like a birthday or anniversary—commemorate a holiday, or capture the essence of a recent vacation. Spend time selecting and printing pictures to use. As you go through this process, you may be inspired by themes and designs.

Gather Supplies

Before you start, there are a few things you’ll need. Remember, you don’t need to go overboard. You can build your scrapbook supplies over time. Here are the basics:

Choose Your Layout

There are many different approaches to scrapbooking. If you want to ease into scrapbooking, you could try your hand at pocket scrapbooking, using our pocket page protectors and putting a mix of photos and cards like our Memories & More cards into the pockets. You can add ephemera, embellishments, and stamps to your photos and cards to make them your own.

Another easy place to begin is with Stampin’ Up! Scrapbooking Workshop Kits. Each kit comes with instructions and a layout to follow in order to create THREE standard 12 x 12 layout. It includes color-coordinated cardstock, stickers, and images. For a more in-depth look at this option, check out Your Guide to Scrapbooking Kits: Turn Memories Into Masterpieces.

More experienced crafters can create their own DIY scrapbook pages. Learn more at Scrapbook Ideas for Every Occasion.
