There are a few different options when you want to make a paper box for gifts. You can choose to make the box completely from scratch, or you can start with a customizable pre-made box like this scalloped gift card box. So not only do you get to be crafty and creative, but the recipient gets a gift wrapped up in thoughtfulness.

Before we get into paper box-making techniques, you will need to gather a few crafting supplies. If you’re using a pre-made paper box, you’ll need it, as well as anything you want to use to decorate it. You might choose to use stamps, ink, embossing supplies, embellishments and ribbon, paper, adhesive, cutting tools, or anything else that sparks your creativity.

If you’re making a handmade gift box from scratch, the essential tools are two sheets of cardstock. These should match or coordinate as you’ll use one for the box top and one for the bottom. You’ll also need a paper trimmer and adhesive. We also recommend a bone folder to help you get crisp lines on your folds.

How To Make Paper Boxes The Easy Way

Once you’ve gathered the necessary materials, it’s time for the fun part—making your handmade gift box!

Custom Homemade Boxes

Here are the steps to make a paper box:

  1. Cut a piece of paper 7″ x 10″ (17.8 x 25.4 cm). You can choose basic cardstock, two-tone cardstock, or patterned paper.
  2. Score on the long side at 1″ (2.5 cm), 4.5″ (11.4 cm), 5.5″ (14 cm), and 9″ (22.9 cm).
  3. Flip the paper and score on the short side at 1″ (2.5 cm) and 6″ (15.2 cm).
  4. Cut flaps along the long side between the score lines.
  5. Add adhesive to the flaps you just created.
  6. Fold and enjoy!
